An old-timey Buffalo man, on the trail of the buffalo one year, was having a hard season. Within just the past week, lightning had made the cattle stampede and he had gotten all full of stickers trying to herd them again; and outlaws had been trying to pick him off from the tops of the surrounding bluffs. Tired, he gazed at the stars one night, reflecting, and he decided that it was time to slow down, after 30 years on the buffalo hunt. “Just one too many a cold night; too many Indian raids; and bad grub all the time", he thought to himself. He decided he needed some stability in his life and he promised himself that when that buffalo season was over, he’d make his way back to Fort Stockton, become a lawman and settle down. As planned, when that buffalo season ended, just before the first snow, he made his way back home, and when he got back to Fort Stockton; he walked straight into the sheriff's office and asked to see the sheriff, who was out. After a few minutes, the sheriff, who must've been about seventy (and not even armed, as far as the Buffalo man could tell), got back from lunch and the Buffalo man tells him, "Sheriff, I want to become a deputy!, Real bad!" "Well, son”, says the sheriff, “not everyone’s cut out to be in law enforcement, but we’ll see. You see this man?" asks the sheriff, handing the Buffalo man a wanted poster that he takes out of his desk drawer, “Let’s see if you can bring this hombre in. He's reported to be in these parts, but I sure can't find him!” The Buffalo man examines the wanted poster, which depicted a crude drawing of a very odd looking outlaw and which read : 'Last seen in Bluff Butte, wearing a black paper hat; a red, striped paper shirt; blue plaid paper pants; and brown paper boots.' "I’ll catch him, sir - you can count on me." said the Buffalo man, continuing, " What's he wanted for, anyway, Sheriff?" asked the eager Buffalo man, soon-to-be Deputy. "Rustling", replies the sheriff. “I knew it!”, exclaimed the Buffalo man, proudly. The Sheriff just nodded approvingly. It was the beginning of a long and beautiful relationship.
